MIRAFLORES
BOWLS CLUB
By Pam Shemmings
Once
again the Bowls Club have had a very good season and a number
of new Members, who together with our visitors to the coast are
very welcome.
The
Miraflores Open sponsored once again by Son Tec Hearing enjoyed
some fantastic weather last November and our Members did well
to come onto the rostrum with Keith McNeil winning the Men's Singles
and Beverley McNeil the Ladies runner up prizes.
Our
Singles champions Monty Wess - what an Octogenarian, so full of
life and fun! And
Barbara Banham regrettably did not win the Champion of Champions
competition although it was held at the Club but the competition
is always tough. In fact Barbara has had a tremendous year, winning
the Paris, Triples and Singles titles, never done before at the
Club and many congratulations go to her.
This
year has seen also three Golden Wedding Anniversaries of
Club members and one Ruby wedding with Maureen and Harry Barker,
Pam and Derek Shemmings and Frank and Jane Tofts all enjoying
50 years of "Bliss"! And Tom and Helda Ivers reaching
the 40th event.
At
the end of the season we will say a sad farewell to our bar staff
of Marie and Martin Macdonald who have been with us for two years.
Marie has decided she is homesick for Yorkshire and hankers after
the chilly winds of the beautiful dales!! But no doubt she will
soon be back for a bit of sun and we look forward to their return
on holiday. However we will be pleased to welcome on September
1st Grant and Carol Frost who are looking forward to taking charge
of the members and
visitors and we wish them well.
Our
fun day for charity was another great success and Valentine's
Day was a riot of colour and the competition was won by Naomi
and Tommy Smith. Unfortunately we could not hold the most important
event of the year the Annual Challenge of the Ladies versus the
Gents on Mothering Sunday due to the heavy rain. But watch out
next year fella's we will play in rain or shine.
The
club closed at the end of July for a well-earned break and we
look forward to a new season with enthusiasm.
