MIRAFLORES
BOWLS CLUB
By Pam Shemmings
The Bowls Club has had a very good
season with successes for the Members' in many outside competitions
held along the Coast.
Since last year, The Club once again captured the Ladies Champion
of Champions Title, in 2002, with the winner being Erica Hooper.
We are very proud of our record in this Competition held in April
each year and the Ladies have held the title for five out of the
last six years with the Men winning on two of these occasions.
Unfortunately this year, 2003, Pam Shemmings and Bernard de Carte
were unsuccessful, but in 2004 the event will be staged at the
Miraflores Club so we hope for a better result.
A new event held at Miraflores this year was an all Men's Triples
in which a team from the Club gained a Second place.
Other successes were in the Ladies Two Wood held at Superbowl,
our own Open Competition held last November
produced a Ladies singles winner and at the Mijas Masters, Keith
and Beverley MacNeil claimed both the the Pairs and the Triples
titles with Brenda Davidson. All in all, a successful year.
Visitors to the Club will have noticed a change in our Bar Staff
as of last September, When Mari Carmen our employee of six years
decided on a change of career, so we now welcome Marie and Martin
MacDonald who have taken over and are very popular with the members
and visitors.
In January each year we hold a Fun Day of Bowling and an Auction
for Charity. This year we chose FuenSocial, a charity for disadvantaged
children and adults and raised the sum of 1700 Euros, which gave
us a lot of pleasure and a lot of fun.
Our Annual Prize giving and Dinner was once again held at the
Miraflors Restaurant on March 1st, St. David's Day. The dancing
to "Neil Diamond" was something to behold and with a
great rendering of the Welsh National Anthem - in Welsh, no one
can say that the Miraflores Bowls Club Members are not young at
heart, even if the old bones ache a bit the next day.
Having said this, we are now having a number of the young generation
joining us, in their fifties and not seventies, but we have a
long way to go yet to beat the Mijas Club whose youngest Member
is just 14 and from Sweden.
Everyone is always very welcome
to come and visit us at the Bowls Club.
